BIOGRAPHY:
Siobhan Donaghy se narodila 14.června 1984 v Londýně, Velká Británie. Má irské kořeny z obou stran rodičů. Již od 12 let veřejně vystupovala a zpívala. Její talent objevil bývalý manažer skupiny All Saints, Ron Tom. Mutya Buena a Siobhan Donaghy spolupracovala s Tomem odděleně.
Pomáhal jim také producent All Saints - Cameron McVey.
Their debut album produced three more top 40 hits in the UK - "New Year", "Run for Cover" and "Soul Sound". Donaghy and her fellow band-mates Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchanan had been following a heavy touring schedule for over a year with Donaghy gradually becoming more and more unhappy with her position in the band. Feeling that the other girls were trying to force out, Donaghy decided to leave of her own accord.
During a Japanese promotional tour Donaghy left the group, while her management stated on her behalf initially that she wanted to pursue a fashion career, she eventually was actually diagnosed with clinical depression amid reports of bullying towards her in the band.
According to Siobhán herself through messages sent to MySpace users, she left the band because she never got along with Keisha, even calling her a bully. She became deeply depressed and could no longer be a part of the band. Siobhan split from the band in August 2001 due to artistic differences, personality differences and alienation in the group.
"I just wanted to get out and do my own thing", Siobhán told on Loose Women in April.
In an interview with The London Paper in April 16th Siobhán said: "It's difficult to leave a band and then make sort of a solo career. I left for a very good reason and I’ve never for a second wanted to go back there."
Donaghy is still in touch with her former band-mate Mutya Buena. “We’re not exactly friends but we make an effort with each other and chat every once in a while. I’m always pleased to see her.” But she is no longer speaking with Keisha Buchanan. Siobhán told she never knew what was Keisha's problem with her and “That’s why I left. Me and Keisha were never friends, and I never knew what her problem was. I took it into my own hands to make myself happy. But I believe in moving forward not backwards and I really don’t want to slag her off.”
"I think we were just very young. I mean we met when I was thirteen. I just think yeah, we probably didn't get on the best. But I think, lots of people met people at school around that time and probably fall out. Don't stay the best of friends forever, but it's not that much of a big deal now", Donaghy told on Channel 5 News in April 10th.
At the age of 19, Donaghy said: "I was 12 when I met the manager, 13 when I met the girls, 16 on the first release, 17 when I left. At which point I was happy never to work in music again. I had got to the point where I'd look in the mirror and not know who I was. I felt like I didn't have a personality. I'd lost my identity... I felt like a zombie. A dead person."
She started writing music along with the help of former producer Cameron McVey to help overcome her depression, and began performing under the alias of "Shanghai Nobody".
Overloaded: The Singles Collection is a greatest hits compilation album from the Sugababes that released on 13 November 2006. Contrary to initial reports that vocals from departed Sugababes Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy were going to be re-recorded by Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah, all the original vocals were kept for the compilation.
Revolution in Me: 2003
In March 2003, Donaghy released her first single as a solo artist. "Nothing But Song" was released as a 7" vinyl single only and was relatively unknown. In June 2003 her first commercial solo single was released. "Overrated", co-written with Cameron McVey, entered the Official UK Singles Chart at #19. The title of the lead single, "Overrated", is a play on words on Sugababes' debut single, "Overload." Following up "Overrated", the single "Twist Of Fate" was released in September 2003 and charted at #52. Two weeks later saw the release of her debut album Revolution in Me.
Donaghy's debut album was released on London Records on 29 September 2003 in the UK. As the booklet includes 8 additional front covers, there is no official album cover, as anyone can change the cover to what they want. It was a flop, with its debut chart position at #117, citing 'lack of promotion' as an excuse. Lending a hand to Donaghy on Revolution in Me were father-son producers and writers Cameron and Marlon Roudette from Mattafix. The Sugababes, All Saints and Neneh Cherry are some of the acts Cameron McVey has worked with in the past. Each of the 12 tracks on the album was co-written by Donaghy with McVey, Preetesh Hirji, Matt Kent, and others. The title Revolution in Me is said to reflect her decision to go her separate way, leaving the Sugababes but in fact Siobhan has stated that none of the songs on this album are about her former band. Several of the tracks on the album have titles which do not appear in the lyrics. The song "Suasex" features a backwards telephone conversation with only Siobhan's voice.
Parlophone bought the rights to this album when they signed Siobhán.
Ghosts: 2007
Donaghy parted with London Records in a mutual decision with the company. After recording a second album with no record label it was rumoured that Donaghy was in talks with Parlophone, part of the EMI group. These rumours have been confirmed by Donaghy herself on her fan site. On her official MySpace page, Donaghy previewed the title track from the album, Ghosts. The title track of the album, Ghosts is played backwards during portions of the song. When the song is reversed, 45 seconds into the song a hidden message is heard (original reversed bit 2.55 into song).
Ghosts and the song "Don't Give It Up" was released in February 2007 as a 12" promotional 2-track single. Don't Give It Up, also previewed on her MySpace page, will be the first commercial single off the album with a full release on April 16 2007. The single will be available digitally a week prior, from April 9. Promotion for the single started in February 2007 with the music video having been shot in various different towns including Marrakech, Essaouira, El Jadida, Morocco and also in mountains. The music video for was directed by Sophie Muller. The video for the single has been available on Youtube since January 25, 2007. Donaghy said this songs main purpose wasn't to chart particularly high; but to introduce people to her music, which she believes it has done a great job with.
The album was recorded in a small studio near Barneville-Carteret, France.
The producer of the album, James Sanger, has worked with artists such as U2, Keane, and Dido. Other producers/songwriters confirmed to have worked with Donaghy on this album are Jony Rockstar, Carl McIntosh (There's A Place), Ben Ranyard (12 Bar Acid Blues), Charles Lucy of Lucy Tuning (Sometimes), and Marius De Vries.
In an interview with BT Vision in April, 2007 Donaghy said: "I would like some commercial success. But only because then you're allowed to make another record." Donaghy promoted this album more than her debut Revolution In Me.
In its first week of release, on downloads alone, the single Don't Give It Up reached a respectable #72, then, upon release of the physical single, went to #45.
Her album, "Ghosts" was finally released on June 25, 2007, via Parlophone, to excellent reviews in the United Kingdom, but with no radio support it peaked at #92, and then, fell out of the Top 200 Albums. Throughout she has been featured in many magazines and it gave her a little more attention.
Before releasing Ghosts Donaghy told The London Paper: “I make leftfield pop music, and it’s a difficult genre to be in because it’s not straight pop, it’s not alternative, and it’s quite hard to market. You have to push it and work it.” Then, with a smile and the blase shrug of youth, she adds: “We’ll see what happens.”
Donaghy told in an interview: "We're looking at a couple of supports at the moment that are happening in the autumn and also a tour of my own in the autumn. We might also be playing G.A.Y. Kelis is playing and we're looking at supporting her."
Other career activities
Since 2003, Donaghy has also appeared as a backing vocalist on the Mattafix album Signs of a Struggle and on the Morcheeba album The Antidote.
Donaghy has been lucky enough to have landed one of the lead roles in the new William Baker directed production of RENT in the West End where she'll be playing the character Mimi. [4] Donaghy will be making her West End debut. The opening night is the 2nd October and will be showing at The Duke Of York theatre. She is said to be overwhelmed she got the part and looking forward to the challenge. In August 2007 Siobhan especially flew out to New York to watch RENT on Broadway to get inspiration for her interpretation of her part.
Donaghy is also working as a DJ. She told her DJ'ing tips to Word magazine in July 2007 by saying: "It's alright to drink when you're DJ'ing - I managed to put away half a bottle of vodka last time I was doing it. Also, only try to mix house tunes and don't bother mixing anything else. And you must dance to the records you're playing."
